| GRUFFY’S NEW SISTER is a 40-page English/Spanish bilingual story for children ages 4 to the young-at-heart adult. On the surface, this is an irresistible story about the proverbial love-hate relationship between cats and dogs, but it offers a deeper message as it deals with the archetypal sibling rivalry issues that arise when a new baby comes into the house. The story is told through the perspective of Gruffy, a two-year old “only dog” who experiences both overwhelming curiosity and extreme jealousy when his mom and dad decide to take a stray kitten into their house. As the days pass and Gruffy’s jealousy heightens, he rigs up a humorous plan to get the cat OUT of his house so he can have his life back the way it used to be. His plan works to perfection, but Gruffy soon realizes things can be more fun with his new baby sister, Kitty, around and has a profound change of heart. |

Gruffy is a dog with an engaging
inner voice whose life becomes upended in the bilingual book, “Gruffy’s New
Sister/La nueva hermana de Gruffy.” The reader eavesdrops on Gruffy’s thoughts
as he plots to secure his place as top dog until a critical event reveals his
better instincts.
Children who love animals, languages or art will feel at home with this story.
This book will especially resonate with a child who is faced with a new arrival
in the family. The faithful English/Spanish translations, the complexity of
Gruffy’s down to earth character, and the age-appropriate content make this an
appealing book for upper elementary school and middle school students.
Isabel Levin’s illustrations greatly enhance the story. The deep, saturated
colors are reminiscent of homes in Mexico and the expressive faces underscore
the strong emotions. Whether in English, Spanish or pictures, this story is full
of heart. |

Gruffy es un perro con una voz interna cautivante al que se le pone la vida ‘patas pa’ arriba’ en el libro bilingüe, La nueva hermana de Gruffy. El lector puede atisbar los pensamientos de Gruffy, conforme Gruffy trama una forma de asegurar su supremacía como perro líder hasta que un evento crítico le revela mejores instintos. Los niños que aman a los animales, al lenguaje o las artes, van a sentirse muy a gusto con este cuento. Este libro va a resonar especialmente con un niño que tiene que encarar la llegada de un nuevo miembro de la familia. Las ilustraciones de Isabel Levin son de gran realce para el cuento. Los colores profundos y saturados son reminiscentes de las casas en México y las caras expresivas subrayan las fuertes emociones. JULIE CATTON AMEZCUA, born in 1970 in Fontana, California, is a writer,
an educator, and of course a pet lover! Her love for writing children’s stories
was birthed while working as a nanny and kindergarten teacher. Julie resides
part of the year in La Manzanilla, Mexico, where she was a founder of
La Catalina Natural Language School,
a Spanish immersion school for adults, teenagers and children, and
La Catalina Educational
Foundation, a non-profit organization which promotes education in the Costa
Alegre in Jalisco, Mexico. Julie’s second home is in Northern California. ISABEL LEVIN was born in 1997 in Hackensack, New Jersey, and lives in Teaneck, NJ. She created the illustrations over the course of her fifth grade year, 2007/2008. Isabel loves to draw and write, and also makes time for playing the piano and the harp, along with other hobbies. She is an avid reader and also a student of Spanish.
